Where to Stay in Puerto Natales: The Town That Runs Torres del Paine

Puerto Natales is about twelve blocks deep and eight wide, which means everything in this guide is inside a fifteen-minute walk of everything else. That makes the choice simpler than it looks: you are not picking a neighbourhood so much as picking a view and a price.

The shore road runs along the Última Esperanza sound, and the hotels on it look across grey water at the Balmaceda glacier and the peaks behind it. Inland, the grid is ordinary Patagonian town: corrugated iron in faded colours, dogs, wind, and a surprising density of good bakeries and gear shops.

The bus terminal sits on the edge of the grid and the tour vans collect from hotel doors, so neither area is meaningfully closer to the park. Our Torres del Paine tours all pick up in town before dawn regardless of which street you are on.

• Waterfront: the view, the pricier rooms, and the wind straight off the sound. From $136.
• Town grid: cheaper, better-scored on average, and closer to the bakeries and gear shops. From $65.
• Above the town: a couple of lodges on the slope with the widest views and the longest walk back. From $116.

The shore road is where the money is. Costaustralis has anchored it for years and is the most-reviewed hotel in town, Noi Indigo is the design one with the rooftop tubs, and Altiplanico sits a little further along with rooms facing the water.

What you are paying for is honest: on a clear evening the light on the sound is the reason people photograph this town, and it lands in the window. On a grey one, and Patagonia does grey generously, you are paying for a view of weather.

Guest scores out here sit between 8.6 and 9.4, which is respectable but not the best in town. That is worth knowing before assuming the pricier road is the better stay.

A few blocks inland the prices drop by a third and the scores go up. Hotel Vendaval holds a 9.8 from 226 reviews, which is the highest in this guide, and it costs $115. Hostal America runs $65 with a 9.6 from 255. Big Sur is $92.

These are small, family-run places, and they behave like it: breakfast is included almost everywhere, and it is served early because the owners know exactly what time your van is coming. That single detail matters more than a view when you are leaving at six.

The grid is also where the practical town is. Gear shops, laundries that turn around trekking clothes in a day, the bakeries, and the supermarkets where everyone buys their trail food before heading north.

If you are walking the W or the O, the hostels in Puerto Natales are not simply the cheap option. They are the infrastructure.

They rent trekking gear by the day: tents, sleeping bags rated for the wind, stoves, poles, and dry bags. They store the luggage you are not carrying into the park, which every trekker needs and few hotels handle well. They sell the bus tickets north, they know which refugios have space, and the good ones will sit down with your itinerary and tell you plainly if it is unrealistic.

Hotels do none of that, or do it as a favour. So the decision splits by trip type rather than by budget: a day tour wants a comfortable bed and an early breakfast, a multi-day trek wants a base that rents you a stove and holds your suitcase.

Many people book both, a hostel bed the night before the trek and a hotel room for the night they come out of the park, which is the one night in Patagonia when a real shower is worth paying for.

The park entrance is about 90 minutes north by road, and the routes into the sectors add more on top: the Laguna Amarga gate, the Pudeto boat and the Grey sector are each a further stretch of gravel apart.

Buses leave the terminal in the morning and again around lunchtime in high season, with a return in the late afternoon. Day tours collect from hotel doors before dawn, which is the argument for booking one rather than assembling the day yourself.

Park entry is separate from everything: CONAF collects it at the gate and it is not included in a room rate or, on most trips, in a tour price. Foreign visitors pay more than Chileans, and the fee is higher in high season.

Wind is the variable nobody plans for. Gusts on the exposed sections routinely knock walkers off their stride, and it is the reason the boat across Pehoé sometimes does not run. Build a spare day into a two-day plan if the towers are the point.

Two nights is the practical minimum: arrive, sleep, take a full day in the park, sleep again, leave. That is the shape almost every day tour assumes and it works.

Three nights lets you add the Milodón Cave or a boat up the sound to the Balmaceda and Serrano glaciers, both of which start in town, and gives you a spare day if the weather closes in.

Four or more is trek territory. The W takes four to five days walking, plus a night either side in town, which is where the hostel-then-hotel pattern comes from.

As for whether the town itself is worth time: a day, honestly. It is a working port with good food and a striking setting, not a destination in its own right, and most people find one afternoon of it is enough before the park pulls them north.

Every figure below is what Expedia listed for a midweek night in September 2026, checked on 1 August 2026. September is late winter in Patagonia and close to the cheapest the town gets. December and January, the peak trekking months, run far higher and sell out months in advance.

We have not stayed at any of these hotels. What we can tell you is how the town is arranged and what other guests reported on Expedia, with the review counts attached, because a 9.8 from 226 reviews is a much stronger claim than the same score from a dozen.

Season is everything in this town. The prices above are late-winter prices. From December to February the same rooms cost far more and the good ones are gone months ahead, and in the deep winter some places simply close.

We have deliberately left the five-star option out of this guide. It sits outside the town on its own and serves a different trip from the one this site is about.
